SMEC: Interchange design in South Africa
The Montrose Interchange project aimed to replace a T-junction on the N4 highway to enhance traffic flow, safety, and boost Mbombela’s economy and tourism. Located in a mountainous area between two rivers, the project faced tough terrain and lacked survey data. SMEC, realizing traditional 2D methods were inadequate, used iTwin Capture to create a reality mesh and LumenRT for design visualization, securing the contract.
Using OpenRoads Designer and corridor modeling tools, SMEC integrated bridge models, calculated materials accurately, and minimized the carbon footprint. The digital workflow saved around 2,500 design hours and ZAR 2.5 million in costs.
